White Rock Loans Review: Scam or Legit?

It is a loan matching service, not a lender, and it publishes no APR. Here is what happens to your application and where to borrow instead.

The Bottom Line

White Rock Loans is a real, operating loan matching service, not a scam, and it costs you nothing. But it is not a lender, it publishes no APR, and it forwards your Social Security number and bank routing details to a network of lenders and marketing partners. Go directly to a lender that quotes you on a soft credit check instead. Check your rate at Upgrade

White Rock Loans is a loan matching service. It is not a lender, it does not decide whether you are approved, and it does not set your rate. What it does is take your application and pass it to a network of lenders and marketing partners. That distinction is the whole story here, and it is the reason we do not recommend it.

What it isLoan matching service
Cost to youFree
APR publishedNone

The site is free to use and it does not charge you anything, which is true and also beside the point. You are not the customer in this arrangement. Your application is the product, and the price you pay is what happens to your personal information afterward.

Scam or legit, answered directly

It is not a scam in the sense of taking your money and disappearing. It is an operating business, it charges you nothing, and it discloses what it is if you read far enough. On its own rates page it states plainly that it “is not a lender and does not provide lending services directly to consumers,” and elsewhere that “the operator of this web site is not a direct lender.”

Legitimate and worth using are different questions though. Our answer to the second one is no, for three reasons that have nothing to do with fraud.

  • You cannot see a rate before you hand over your data. The site publishes no APR range at all. Its own disclosure says “the rates and fees applicable to your loan will be set by your lender,” so you are applying blind
  • The information it collects is unusually sensitive and its sharing is broad, which we cover below
  • You can get an actual rate quote elsewhere without any of this, from a real lender, on a soft credit check that does not affect your score

What happens to your application

Read the privacy policy before you fill in anything. By its own account the site collects your driver’s license, Social Security number, military status, address, phone, email, employment details, income sources and amounts, whether you rent or own, and the bank account where you want funds “including ABA/routing numbers.” It then forwards your application “to Lenders in our network” and shares information for “joint marketing with Lenders and marketing affiliates” and with “third party marketers.” You can opt out of some marketing sharing. You cannot opt out of the sharing with lenders, because that is the service.

That combination, a Social Security number and a bank routing number distributed across an undisclosed network of companies, is the actual cost of a free loan matching service. Once it is out there you cannot pull it back, and the volume of calls, texts and email that follows is a well known consequence of applying through services structured this way.

It is also worth noting that the privacy policy names no operating company and gives no business address, so there is no way to tell from the site who ultimately holds your data.

A note on the web address

There is a genuine source of confusion worth flagging. The site currently operates at whiterockloans.net. The .com version of the address is no longer registered and now serves a registrar parking page, so anyone who remembers the old address, or follows an older link to it, will not reach the company. Several older links to the .com now redirect to entirely different lending companies. If you are determined to use a service like this, at least be certain which site you are actually on before you type in a Social Security number.

Where to borrow instead

The straightforward alternative is to go to a lender directly. Both of these show you a real rate on a soft credit check, which does not affect your score, and both tell you who they are and what they charge before you commit to anything.

Upgrade

Upgrade is an actual lender rather than a middleman. It publishes its range up front, funds loans from $1,000 to $50,000, and will tell you during the application whether adding a car as collateral improves the offer, which is useful if your credit is fair rather than good.

Loan amounts$1,000 to $50,000
APR range7.74% to 35.99%
Rate checkSoft credit pull

Check your rate at Upgrade and see a real number before you give anyone your details.

Upstart

Upstart weighs education and employment history alongside your credit score, which tends to help people whose credit file is short rather than damaged. It is the more useful option if you have been declined for having little borrowing history rather than for missed payments.

Loan amounts$1,000 to $75,000
APR range6.3% to 35.99% fixed
Terms3 or 5 years

Check your rate at Upstart to see what you qualify for.

If neither works out, compare the wider field in our guide to the best personal loans, or if you have savings or a vehicle you can pledge, secured personal loans approve people that unsecured lending turns down.

How to spot a matching service before you apply

This pattern is common and easy to recognize once you know what to look for.

SignWhat it means
No APR range anywhere on the siteThey cannot tell you, because they are not the one lending
“We are not a lender” in the small printThe clearest possible confirmation. Look for it on the rates or terms page
Asks for your Social Security number before showing any offerA real lender can prequalify you on a soft pull first
No named company or business addressYou cannot tell who ends up holding your data
“Connecting you with lenders in our network”Your application is being distributed, not underwritten

None of this is illegal and some matching services are run responsibly. But you give up a lot for a service whose only advantage is filling in one form instead of two.

If the amount you need is small

A personal loan is the wrong tool for a few hundred dollars. If you are covering a gap until payday, the options in our roundup of cash advance apps cost far less than a short term loan, and $100 instant loan apps covers the smaller end specifically. If the shortfall keeps recurring, the more durable fix is in how to get out of debt rather than another application.

Frequently asked questions

Is White Rock Loans a legitimate company?

It is a real, operating loan matching service rather than a fraud, and it costs you nothing to use. It is not a lender though, and it says so itself. Its rates page states that it is not a lender and does not provide lending services directly to consumers. We do not recommend it because it publishes no APR and shares your application widely. Upgrade will show you an actual rate on a soft credit check instead.

Does White Rock Loans do a credit check?

It does not underwrite you at all, so there is nothing for it to check. The lenders it forwards your application to will run their own checks, and because your details may go to several of them, you have limited control over how many inquiries result.

What information does White Rock Loans collect?

By its own privacy policy: driver’s license, Social Security number, military status, address, phone, email, employment information, income sources and amounts, whether you rent or own, and the bank account including ABA and routing numbers. It shares this with lenders in its network and with marketing partners, and you cannot opt out of the sharing with lenders.

What is a better alternative?

Go directly to a lender that publishes its rates. Upgrade covers $1,000 to $50,000 at 7.74% to 35.99% APR, and Upstart goes to $75,000 and weighs education and employment alongside your credit score. Both quote you on a soft pull that does not affect your credit.

Why does whiterockloans.com not work?

That domain is no longer registered and serves a registrar parking page. The company operates at the .net address instead. Older links pointing at the .com now lead to unrelated lending companies, so check which site you are actually on before entering any personal information.

Where to go next

If your credit is what is holding you back, establishing credit from scratch is the groundwork worth doing first, and it costs nothing.
